Richard Oldden: Call Me George

The final quartet of original drawings by Richard Oldden were sold on eBay earlier this month. The artist visits several well-traveled cartoon tropes and puts a new twist on each of them. One of the gags is wordless and in four panels on two sheets of paper. We aren't told where any of the cartoons were published.

"My name is Kenzaburo Toramichi . . .           "At first we thought we would be swamped with tourists,
You may call me George."                           —but somehow it never caught on."

eBay bid history
Three bidders make seven bids over seven days. It's the last one that counts.

Note:  It's likely that many or all of the Dick Oldden cartoons in these eBay groupings of four were published somewhere in a mainstream magazine. But where? And when? It's questions like this that cry out for answers. Help if you can.

A Pointer from Garrett Price

A drawing by Garrett Price shows up on eBay cheaply-framed and without any matting. Two hunters approach a dog pointing to his rear. This appears to be a cartoon missing its caption. An eBay seller clearly has no idea what it is but is able to identify the breed as a Brittany spaniel. The seller adds helpfully, "This does not look like a print at all." That's always good to know. It is listed for $49.95 but eventually sells for just $37.46.

It turns out that's a very nice price—for the buyer—because this piece is an original cartoon from the New Yorker. Published in 1955, the missing caption is "I've always allowed him to do it his own way."

Barbara Shermund's Big-Game Hunter

A lovely, framed piece of preliminary New Yorker art by Barbara Shermund was sold on eBay in March. Such preliminary artwork lets us compare the artist's original conception of the cartoon with the final published 1934 version incorporating editorial changes. Along the way to publication, the big-game hunter's name is changed from the made-up Mr. Macspratton to the more plausible Mr. Mackintosh. The hunter's position has become more central in the published version where he holds up his rifle to demonstrate his shooting stance. As a result of this change, the speaker addressing her dog Toby, in order for us to see her, has to lean down a bit, which works well as it brings her closer to the dog. The overall result is a more dynamic composition in the published drawing, albeit a little less subtle.

May 26, 2016 Update:  This Barbara Shermund piece has been resold. The eBay seller has incorporated my images of the published New Yorker cartoon in the listing as well as my text comparing the preliminary art with the published art, lifted almost verbatim from this post without credit. The artwork has been removed from the good-looking frame and sold at a Buy It Now price that is double the original sale price.
