My Entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #914

Two goldfish in a bowl hover over a laptop computer in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #914 from the issue of September 23, 2024. My submission is shown below. The watertight drawing is by Ivan Ehlers.

"I'm calling it the Bowl Wide Web."

These captions didn't hold water:

"Now there's something we can surf."
"Not that kind of net."
"I was taught to stay away from any net."
"Why do we need to communicate with the entire bowl?"
"It's great for jogging the old memory."
"If only it were waterproof."

Richard Oldden's Nursing Mermaid

Richard Oldden's drawing of a nursing mermaid was sold on eBay in January for $79. It is from the collection of Jackie Mack, a "Laguna Beach Legend" I haven't heard of. It was sold with another Oldden drawing of a mermaid, so with any luck the pair will remain together.

Tony Sarg: Furiouser and Furiouser

An original cartoon by Tony Sarg from 1935 apparently is meant as a children's vocabulary-builder: "Furious means ANGRY!" Too bad it's not meant as a character-builder. That father's energy would be better spent fetching a bucket of water to rescue the fish.

Note:  If you should happen to be sitting on the obscure 1930's publication in which this cartoon originally appeared, don't be shy about it. People need to know.

Tony Sarg is the cartoonist and puppeteer who first introduced character balloons to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Melissa Sweet wrote and illustrated a children's book about him, a Caldecott honor winner. See my blog post on the book here.
