Four Souvenir Sketches by Niculae Asciu

Four souvenir sketches on colored index cards by cartoonist Nicolae Asciu (1942-2013) were offered for sale on eBay in 2015. Two of them are gags about stethoscopes, one is about the violin, and one is about boating. All four sketches are dated September 19, 1982 and since they were sold together they might be inscribed to members of a single family or possibly medical practice. Initially offered at $49 each, one was sold at an undisclosed Best Offer price at which point the other three were reduced to opening bids of $8.99.

Gregory d'Alessio for Collier's: The Family Gadabout

In 1950 America was enjoying a new postwar prosperity. At the boat show, there may still be a wealthy few shopping for yachts, but the sales are now directed toward the many young families interested in the small, affordable powerboat here called the Family Gadabout. Collier's cover artist Gregory d'Alessio is documenting nothing less than the rise of America's middle class. The three older children were born during the war, but that girl in her mother's arms is part of a new postwar demographic phenomenon called the baby boom. Incidentally those international maritime signal flags across the top spell out a message for those in the know:  "Collier's for Action."
Gregory d'Alessio, Collier's, January 14, 1950

Note:  This concludes, for now, Attempted Bloggery's rather incomplete review of the work of cartoonist Gregory d'Alessio. Ink Spill documents his sparse work for the New Yorker appearing between 1934 and 1940. Attempted Bloggery continues to seek scans or photographs of original cartoon art by Mr. d'Alessio and other New Yorker artists. Scans of cartoons and illustrations from College Humor, Collier's, Esquire, and other publications would also be appreciated

Mr. d'Alessio's obituary in New York Times may be seen here.

Gregory d'Alessio: Summer Fishing

The June 11, 1949 cover of Collier's features an illustration by Gregory d'Alessio. The summery image features an overcrowded recreational fishing boat. The illustration is very busy, probably too busy, but its message is clear: the big winners seem to be the seagulls.

Gregory d'Alessio, Collier's, June 11, 1949

Note:  Yesterday marked Gregory d'Alessio's first appearance on Attempted Bloggery. As I noted, Ink Spill has documented his work for the New Yorker appearing between 1934 and 1940. As you might guess, Attempted Bloggery seeks scans or photographs of original cartoon art by Mr. d'Alessio and other New Yorker artists. Clippings of cartoons and illustrations from Collier's and other publications are also needed to round out our appreciation of this artist.

Mr. d'Alessio's informative New York Times obituary may be seen here.
