My Entry in the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #505

Here is my entry in the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #505 for January 11, 2016. The drawing is by Mick Stevens.
"Have you seen the new cat or the new dog?"



These alternate captions didn't deserve a bite:
"Why the long face?"
"Well, look who came crawling in!"
"This is a fine time to come crawling in!"
"Your habits are positively prehistoric."
"You're not home until the tail is in."
"Have you seen Fluffy?"
"Have you seen Fluffy No. 2?"

    "It wasn't a tight squeeze on the way out."

    This is a tough one because it's not a significant incongruity (it's still an animal). Same goes for the guillotine (still could kill).

    I seem to recall a past contest cartoon that also had alligators and also had a finalist that had a joke about shoes being from someone they know.

    I was also thinking of an Amazon caption...I have to give the person credit for having the man talking to his wife rather than the alligator.

      Found it. Contest #307. Two alligators on a subway. Winning caption was "That lady's shoes kind of remind me of Joey."
