Papa Smurf by Peyo

I don't know much about Belgian cartoonist Peyo (1928-1992), creator of the Smurfs, but he looks as if he enjoyed his work. His souvenir sketch of Papa Smurf is currently listed on AbeBooks.

My Entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #799

This week, I savored my entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #799 from the issue of April 18, 2022. My caption is shown below. The drawing is by Lars Kenseth.

"I was getting tired of catnip."

This caption just wasn't the right vintage.

"It has notes of catnip."

May 13, 2022 Update:  I may have forgotten to vote this time around. I probably would have gone with the caption from Phoenix.

Helen E. Hokinson: Easter Parade for a WAC?

Oh, I could write a sonnet about Helen E. Hokinson's cover for the April 1943 Woman's Home Companion.

A similar idea appears on an undated wartime postcard by an anonymous illustrator. In this case, the garish colors are distracting compared with Hokinson's limited palette.

My Entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #798

This week, I was quite handy with my entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #798 from the issue of April 11, 2022. My caption is shown below. The drawing is by Frank Cotham.

"I can give you a ride home."

These captions put me to sleep:

"Have you considered it may just be hibernating?"
"Don't dismember it. What if it's just hibernating?"

A Signed Movie Still from "Animal Crackers"

A movie still from "Animal Crackers" (1930) was signed by Groucho Marx, probably decades after the original release. The eBay seller who attested to this in 2014 tried to inspire confidence by including a scan of a signed certificate of authenticity, otherwise blank. Also of questionable value is the seller punctiliously providing  a list of Groucho's solo film work, when the photograph is obviously from a Marx Brothers comedy.

Lawrence Lariar and Syd Hoff in College Humor, July 1942

Lawrence Lariar contributes two wartime gag cartoons to a page in the July 1942 College Humor. Syd Hoff is there on the page as well, with a cartoon about those who seem to be unaffected by the war.

Cartoons by Lawrence Lariar and Syd Hoff
College Humor, Vol. 14, No. 2, July 1942, page 20

Note:  Syd Hoff also contributed "I Married an Angel" to this July 1942 number of College Humor. You can read it here in the archives. There's more there by Lawrence Lariar in the issue too, but for some reason I didn't bother to photograph it. So it goes. This magazine is one of more than 5,600 magazines held in the Steven Boss humor magazine collection at Columbia University in the Butler Library's Rare Book and Manuscript Library and it is the first I tried to photograph. You see, I paid a half-day's visit six years ago and this is the fifty-first post to come out of it. There's still more to come. Contact Curator for Comics and Cartoons Karen Green to learn more.

Attempted Bloggery is eager to receive scans or photographs of original art by Syd Hoff or even Lawrence Lariar, as well as obscure published cartoons, illustrations, and other assorted features. Remember, there are a lot of old humor magazines out there.

Jack Ziegler's Cartoon Library

The personal library of New Yorker cartoonist Jack Ziegler (1942-2017) remains happily intact. Many of his cartoon books will be familiar to readers of this blog. Most, but not quite all, are related to The New Yorker and its artists. These tantalizing photographs of Mr. Ziegler's home library appear here courtesy of Jessica Ziegler.

The cabinet contains unpublished cartoons organized by subject matter.

A peek inside at a little of the art:

Note:  Thanks to Jessica Ziegler for her work as photographer and hand model.

MoCCA Fest 2022: Charlotte Brontë Before Jane Eyre by Glynnis Fawkes

The MoCCA Arts Fest 2022 gave me the opportunity to catch up on some recent graphic novels. Charlotte Brontë Before Jane Eyre has been on my short list since its publication in 2019, but this was the time to get a copy personalized by author Glynnis Fawkes. Reader, she signed it.

MoCCA Fest 2022: R. Sikoryak's Terms and Conditions

In 2017, the versatile R. Sikoryak worked the voluminous iTunes terms and conditions into a graphic novel populated by many recognizable, if somewhat scruffy, comic characters. Having agreed to such terms and conditions myself over the years in various versions, I thought it might finally be time to read them. The author was at MoCCA Fest last weekend, making it the ideal opportunity to pick up a signed—and bearded—copy.

MoCCA Fest 2022: Derf Backderf's Kent State

As I walked into the MoCCA Arts Fest on Saturday, Derf Backderf was the first artist I encountered. There was no way I wast going to miss the opportunity to get a signed copy of his Kent State: Four Dead in Ohio (2020). And just look at the original drawing he added! This is one of those books I would very likely have picked up in 2020 or 2021 at MoCCA Fest if the even hadn't been canceled owing to the pandemic. Now all of us clearly had some catching up to do.
