The Great Temple by David Roberts

On November 13, an incomplete collection of monumental plates from Egypt and Nubia (1846) by David Roberts was sold at Bonhams for 7,500 GBP, The print reproduced in the auction house's listing is "The Great Temple of Aboo-Simble" (Abu-Simbel). It is remarkable for its perspective, its detail, and its sweeping scale, which includes six human figures..

William Steig's Singing Hillbilly

This spirited drawing of a hillbilly recording himself singing and playing the guitar was created by William Steig,  who was born on this day in 1907. It was probably published in Collier's around 1956. The original artwork was offered for sale by Taraba Illustration Art on October 21, 2011 and sold within a few short months. I've preserved the text from the original listing below.

Artist: William Steig (1907-2003)
Description: Hillbilly playing guitar for tape recorder.
Caption: not known
Publication information: Most likely for Collier's magazine, ca. 1956.
Medium: Pen and ink, wash en grisaille
Size: 6.25 x 7”
Signature: Signed lower right.
Condition: Overall very good, light discoloration to sheet, registration marks could easily be matted out, not framed.
Comment: Here's a nice whimsical cartoon that should be pretty much perfect for anyone in the music industry. For that matter, think of the movie Oh Brother, Where Art Thou... if you know anyone who was involved in that classic, wouldn't this make a nice gift?
Price: $550

Playing Their Cards Right

William Hamilton's humor can be sly and subtle. There is nothing overtly hilarious about the situation--three businessmen in dark suits having a drink together--or even about the caption: "The Lord is good to those who play their cards right." But this conflation of pious religious language with casual business talk allows us to hear and surmise what these men cannot. We suspect the reason they can so deftly "play their cards right" is perhaps not solely divine intervention but rather that they were each dealt a winning hand at birth.

The eBay seller of the original artwork does not know the publication history. As always, I'd be happy to hear from anyone who does. The "5-11" on the artwork suggests it may be a daily panel from Mr. Hamilton's syndicated newspaper strip.

Jungle Love

"Jungle Love" is a beautiful Hermès silk scarf designed by Robert Dallet for the 2000 collection. In general, all the company's scarves are exceptionally well-designed and can stand up to the test of time.

If I Ran the Seuss

In 2008, Swann Galleries offered a signed and inscribed copy of If I Ran the Zoo (1950) by Dr. Seuss. It contains a small but charming original drawing by the good doctor.

September 8, 2013 Update:  This item has now been resold on eBay. The price is slightly lower than the 2008 Swann price when you take into account the auction house buyer's premium and, to be strictly correct, inflation.

Cassandre's Best Way

A. M. Cassandre's powerful L. M. S. Best Way poster design was published in a very limited edition of fifty and was apparently never used to publicize the British railway line. It's a shame because it's a stunning design that against all odds managed to make its way into the history  of graphic design. This initialed and numbered poster sold yesterday for an absolutely astounding $130,000!

Whistler's Little Venice

Whistler's deceptively-simple etching Little Venice has remarkable depth. Whispy clouds play over the busy horizon line on which the city of Venice floats. Below this dense horizon, gondolas go about their business and poles stand in the shimmering water conveying a rudimentary perspective. The extreme foreground is not empty but reveals warm inky plate tone wtih stunning effect. This little masterwork was sold at Swann Galleries on September 20 for $9,000.

Sale 2286 Lot 53
JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
Little Venice.

Etching and drypoint printed in dark brownish black on cream laid paper, 1880. 184x264 mm; 7 1/4x10 3/8 inches. MacDonald's second state (of 2), with the scraper marks at the corners removed. Edition of approximately 70, of which approximately 25 were printed during the mid-1880s, such as the current impression, and trimmed to the plate mark with the signature tab. Signed with the butterfly and inscribed "imp" in pencil on the tab, lower left. From Twelve Etchings. A superb impression with selective wiping and with all the fine lines printing clearly.

According to MacDonald, impressions from the later, mid-1880s printings "were printed with a light, carefully wiped surface tone of ink, to augment the color and atmospheric effect of oily stillness of the lagoon." Kennedy 183; MacDonald 238.
Estimate $15,000-20,000
