William Hamilton's humor can be sly and subtle. There is nothing overtly hilarious about the situation--three businessmen in dark suits having a drink together--or even about the caption: "The Lord is good to those who play their cards right." But this conflation of pious religious language with casual business talk allows us to hear and surmise what these men cannot. We suspect the reason they can so deftly "play their cards right" is perhaps not solely divine intervention but rather that they were each dealt a winning hand at birth.
The eBay seller of the original artwork does not know the publication history. As always, I'd be happy to hear from anyone who does. The "5-11" on the artwork suggests it may be a daily panel from Mr. Hamilton's syndicated newspaper strip.
