First Time at Fenway

Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, is the oldest Major League ballpark. I made my first visit there on August 1. It's obvious why Red Sox fans love this old stadium and want to keep it forever. Entering on Yawkey Way, one immediately enters a festive atmosphere cerebrating the Red Sox. The stadium itself is small by today's standards and therefore intimate; a game feels like a big family gathering. The park is largely free of the distracting amplified noise that fills every free second in most other parks. The Red Sox took on the Tampa Bay Rays and handily defeated them, 11-7.

In 1919, The Red Sox sold Babe Ruth's contract to the New York Yankees. Smart move.

Copper tanks, hot water heaters memorialized. Personally, I think this is a bit much.

"It is Balloon:" Leaving the Museum of Fine Arts

There's a lot more to see in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, but we'll get back to some of that at a later date. For now, most readers of this blog will be happy to see a blimp floating above the art museum. Disappointingly, it isn't there to get the notice of legions of art lovers, but rather of the fans at the Red Sox game in nearby Fenway Park.

What's that up in the sky?

The Goodyear Blimp

As a young boy, I was always excited to see the Goodyear blimp from my window as it floated towards and away from Flushing Airport. Even then, I felt extremely privileged to have such a superb vantage point. I also had the Manhattan skyline to enjoy and I knew that was quite special. The Flushing Airport was closed in 1984, but I had moved to the suburbs long before then.

This Kodachrome slide of the blimp is from the 1960's and shows an airfield in a warmer location with palm trees. The original image is from a listing on eBay. While I wasn't paying attention, it apparently became very easy to make digital images from slides. That's a good thing to know, right?
