Vagabond Books of Pasadena didn't have all that much to say about their unique copy of Edward Koren'sWhat About Me? It's described as "a near fine first in wraps signed with drawing." What drawing, you ask? The listing on AbeBooks shows only a photograph of the book's cover, time-stamped in early 2012 and oddly labeled as a stock image. The image is not in any way helpful, but the book was listed reasonably at $35 with a slightly less reasonable $8 shipping charge. In other words, it seemed to me a worthwhile gamble to purchase this book sight unseen. My usual follow up is to report to the blog's readership the results of my reckless behavior. Naturally, I took the plunge.

So, was this a sound purchase? Evidently it was—for somebody else. On August 31, 2022, I was notified by AbeBooks that the order was canceled by the bookseller. I would not after all get to assess the original Koren drawing.
Nothing to see here folks, sorry. But I do wonder what could have happened. Do booksellers really lose track of their inventories and continue to list sold items? I've seen it before, supposedly.
Note: I know it's a long shot, but I would still like to hear from the purchaser of this book and to see that original drawing. If you don't have it, that's okay; I'm also eager to see other Koren drawings in other Koren books.
The prices for original Charles Addams drawings continue to rise, and the prices of his renderings of Addams Family members continue to rise more so. Still, souvenir drawings of a standing Wednesday Addams, the daughter in everyone's favorite ghoulish family, seem to be more common than those of the other family members. It is surprising, therefore, to find a December 1954 Addams inscription with such a drawing being offered by a Pasadena bookseller for a very solid $3,000. It's a really nice copy, but is it $3,000 worth of really nice? It is also surprising that this dealer would try to sell the book with the prominent shadow of a cell phone on the photo of the critical page. Could this listing be a response to early publicity for the new Netflix series "Wednesday" due later this year from Tim Burton and starring Jenna Ortega as the title character? A short but intriguing teaser has been released. Original Addams drawings of this character may already be asking a new premium.

May 29, 2025 Update: Goodbye, Mother Hazel. The inscription page has been removed from the book and the drawing has been reframed with no inscription visible. We still have Addams's drawing of Wednesday, of course, along with the signature, city, and date. The page is framed and matted.
The new asking price is $4,195 and there's a certificate of authenticity. Incidentally, in the listing the seller is completely above-board about this drawing's origins. I'm a little surprised that the Homebodies book didn't sell during season 1 of "Wednesday." The framed drawing is all ready for the season 2 premiere on August 6.
