Time in the Garden: Beatrice Szanton Original New Yorker Cover Art

In the garden a sundial indicates it's almost 5 p.m., a time that in a less idyllic setting might signal the close of the office workday. Beatrice Szanton's original cover art for the New Yorker was conceived apparently as a narrow painting not in the correct proportions of the magazine. Three visible guidelines crop the image into the proper cover ratio, and a second signature has been placed within the published image.

Note:  Two examples of Beatrice Szanton's proposed New Yorker cover art were shared here in yesterday's blog post, while other artists' examples of published original New Yorker cover art have been presented in the past. Remember, Attempted Bloggery is always looking for exciting examples of New Yorker cover proposals and roughs, as well as original published art. Why not share it here? In the words of Rafiki, "It is time."

In the Mix: Beatrice Szanton Proposed New Yorker Cover Art

Beatrice Stanton, who was married to cartoonist Barney Tobey, contributed eleven covers to the New Yorker. Two proposed but rejected covers were sold at Swann Auction Galleries in January. Both are excellent works of art; why not sell them separately?

Note:  There is a large spectrum of proposed but rejected New Yorker covers. The best of them, like these, are in my opinion as good as anything published on the cover of the magazine.
