Arnold Roth: From the Collection of Paul P. Goldberg

Cartoonist Arnold Roth presented collector Paul P. Goldberg with an autograph drawing of the artist's self-portrait bust on a pedestal body, walking. The nose, befittingly for Roth, is a pen nib. The effort on Roth's part seems to be greater than required; he clearly loves to draw. The card is very specifically dated and postmarked February 12, 1968. It was mailed in Princeton.

Arnold Roth: Franz Kline

A humorous color lithograph by Arnold Roth purports to show artist Franz Kline at work. It was published in an edition of 300 plus 35 artist's proofs. The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum has an artist's proof of Franz Kline in its collection. The museum website gives the date as 1990 while noting that its own proof was exhibited in Basel in 2003. Print no. 70/300 was sold this week at auction in Valatie, New York, for $70.

A George Plimpton Letter to Danny Shanahan

George Plimpton (1927-2003), editor of The Paris Review, had been in attendance at a book launch for Lee Lorenz's The Art of the New Yorker 1925-1995 where he, Plimpton, polymath that he was, joined the cartoonists who were signing copies of the book. As I recall, one of the copies he signed at the event belonged to cartoonist Danny Shanahan (1956-2021), who at one time posted images from it on his Facebook page, including one which showed that Plimpton had indulged in his own fanciful propeller-like doodles. Plimpton, it seems, had pitched Shanahan briefly on joining other cartoonists in contributing to the The Paris Review's forthcoming issue dedicated to humor which was slated for the fall of 1995.

Plimpton followed up by sending an undated, typed letter asking Shanahan to select a special cartoon of his and describe how it came into being, giving him a deadline in just some three weeks. For whatever reason, this never happened and the issue went to press without a contribution from the cartoonist. In 2013, Shanahan put the letter up for sale on the auction site eBay. He included a handwritten note from Plimpton with three of those very same little propeller doodles, or as Shanahan described it, a "very rare, one-of-a-kind, hand-drawn, signed cartoon." That may have been overselling it.

Arnold Roth On Ice

The National Hockey League (NHL) begins its 2017-2018 season today. Some forty years ago, cartoonist Arnold Roth envisioned the sport besieged by an energy crisis limiting the availability of ice. Fortunately, he had a practical solution at the ready.

An undated Roth drawing for TV Guide depicts the NHL as a number of "cops"—one a giant—policing the sport. This may be a reference to league efforts to curtail the violent fights that threatened the sport's popularity.

Finally, a December 1999 illustration by Mr. Roth for Sports Illustrated depicts some wildly exaggerated Hockey Cheats with various nefarious implements of game disruption.

Note:  It's hard to believe, but this is the first appearance of Arnold Roth on this blog. Careful readers may have noted the tantalizing appearance of a numeral 4 in the corner of the Energy Crisis artwork. This strongly suggests that there are at least three other drawings in the series out there somewhere! It also suggests, of course, that Energy Crisis was published as part of a set and not created specifically for the enjoyment of the Rathbones as the eBay seller seems to believe. Cartoon detectives, you know what you have to do.

To my mind, no blog post about illustration art is truly complete without specific and scrupulous publication information. Therefore I invite students of hockey illustration art and members of local Arnold Roth societies to provide this blog with the missing publication history for each of these hockey-themed illustrations. For that matter, I'm always eager to show scans and photos of other original art by Mr. Roth and by other New Yorker artists on just about any subject, hockey or otherwise.

October 31, 2017 Update:  On Twitter, Cary Moy has identified the publication source of the Energy Crisis artwork as Sports Illustrated's issue of December 3, 1973.

Diane Vaughan's Copy of The Art of the New Yorker 1925-1995

The date was September 15, 1995. The New Yorker's cartoon editor, Lee Lorenz, had just published The Art of The New Yorker 1925-1995. A signing party was held, by all accounts a festive affair hosted by editor Tina Brown, then about midway through her time at the magazine. Perhaps twenty cartoonists were present according to David Pascal, who was one of those twenty. He thought most of the other 95% of those present were probably employees of the magazine.

One of these employees was Diane Vaughan, Merchandising Director of the New Yorker. Her copy of the book was sold in 2012 at Swann Galleries in New York. Like Pascal's copy, it has original drawings and inscriptions by several New Yorker cartoonists, among others. Swann's auction listing includes a fine drawing by Frank Modell and Edward Koren, as well as a dated inscription from Robert Weber. Unfortunately Swann included only one photo, thus omitting the contributions of Roz Chast, George Booth, Edward Sorel, Victoria Roberts, Arnold Roth, and Jack Ziegler. Who wants to see those anyway?

Greetings to Merchandising Director Diane Vaughan from cover artist Kathy Osborn, and cartoonists Frank Modell, Bob Weber, and Edward Koren, plus one Wayne B.

August 22, 2022 Update:  This book was resold on April 7, 2022 by Alexander Historical Auctions, LLC, of Chesapeake Bay, thankfully with more and better images. Despite these, and with ten years going by, it went for exactly the same amount, $180. Why? Now we get to see the  original cat drawn—and labeled—by George Booth, a quickie sketch by Bob Mankoff showing precious little effort, another heavily inked sketch from someone named Wayne B., and sketches by cartoonists Jack Ziegler, Arnold Roth, Danny Shanahan, Roz Chast, Victoria Roberts, and Edward Sorel. Cover artist Gretchen Dow Simpson leaves a warm inscription.

The drawings by Booth, Chast, Koren, Modell, Roberts, Shanahan, and Ziegler are quite collectable. Book sketches such as the ones by Roth and Sorel are downright scarce. Inscriptions by cover artists Osborn and Dow Simpson are hard to come by as well.

Again, a better image of greetings to Merchandising Director Diane Vaughan from cover artist Kathy Osborn, and cartoonists Frank Modell, Robert Weber, and Edward Koren, as well as the ubiquitous Wayne B.

The Art of The New Yorker 1925-1995
Item description

Note:  This is the fourth copy of this book to appear on the blog, and at least the second to come out of this signing party. See other copies of The Art of The New Yorker 1925-1995.

Good news! There's more to read here about Frank Modell. More, but not enough.

Then there's really not enough of Robert Weber.

But if you're looking to find more from Edward Koren, you've come to the right place.
