Carl Rose at the Hairdresser's

Cartoonist Carl Rose takes us to the hairdresser's in this New Yorker gag drawing from the late 1940's. The original artwork for it received sixteen bids on eBay, which is a lot of activity, but these bids brought the price up to only $128.05. Note that by depicting the man as bald, Rose has made the contour of his head not all that different from the hair dryers, and it may take a moment to notice how his situation is different from the women on either side of him. Having the man be bald also draws more attention to his beard, which is mostly hidden but still has to be noticed for the gag to make sense.

On Ice with Mickey and Minnie

Mickey Mouse and the gang don ice skates for some surprisingly perilous winter fun in the 1935 Disney short "On Ice." The cover to the Holiday Number of Mickey Mouse Magazine from December 1935 proves a convenient tie-in to the beautiful new cartoon. Five years later, the magazine cover featured another character from the short, Minnie Mouse. As we have seen before, what is today some rather old-fashioned sex role stereotyping seems to be in play here. Where the dashing Mickey is confident and cheerful, Minnie is awkward and fearful, looking very much the damsel in distress. Now who do you suppose will come to her aid?

Paging Doctor Mouse

These photos were taken during my most recent trip to Walt Disney World in March of 2008. Here in Crystal Arts on Main Street, USA, we see Mickey and Minnie Mouse assuming responsible roles in health care. All well and good, right?

Is it my imagination, or is the lesson here that boy mice should become doctors and girl mice should become nurses? Am I reading too much into this? I don't think so. Welcome back to the 1950's!

Notes:  My previous post on Disney animation art is here.

My last post on Crystal Arts regarding the Swarovski Cinderella Castle is here.

Blog Update:  My Happy Birthday, George Booth post has been updated again here to follow up on James Gurney's contest to "finish" The New Yorker cover.
