Peter Arno: Sandy Claus Arrives

In an advertisement in the January 1936 issue of Esquire, cartoonist Peter Arno (1904-1968) has clothed Santa (make that Sandy) Claus in tartan to promote the Grand Macnish liqueur scotch whiskey. From a practical point of view, the reindeers' hind legs are way too close to the sleigh, seemingly touching it. The manner in which the house's silhouette is framed inside the antlers is also just a little too pat, but it works well enough. In sum, it's remarkable how much activity Arno was able to squeeze into a limited amount of space, all of it seen boldly in close-up.

Snookey's Copy of Bottle Fatigue by Vip

Virgil Partch, or Vip, was quite generous in presenting readers with drawings in his signed cartoon books. Even so, Snookey must have been pretty special to merit not one but two full-page cartoons in the book Bottle Fatigue (1950), a collection of cartoons about alcohol. The drawings seem to be unusually finished and may have been executed in Partch's studio. The drawings, left to right, are labeled (Scotch) and (Gin). Or perhaps they're about shaking drinks.
Scan by Scott Burns

Note:  Scott Burns has come through once again with a great scan of a Partch rarity. This is his eighth contribution to this blog. You'll see, we'll be up to ten in no time.

Can one have too much of a good thing? I don't see how. Attempted Bloggery seeks images of original Vip cartoons or signed Virgil Partch books with souvenir drawings.

Helen E. Hokinson: Some Clever Little Mountaineer

Of the four original New Yorker cartoons by Helen E. Hokinson offered last November at Doyle New York, three sold below the low estimate. Only one remained unsold: this one. Has Hokinson fallen so much out of fashion? Surely some collector should have grabbed up this original drawing with its well-heeled shopper earnestly posing her naive query.
