Bernard Wiseman: Yankee Go Home?

Cartoonist Bernard Wiseman depicts an American abroad in an undated color cartoon. Judging by the architecture, this may be set in Moscow. At any rate, it's some place where the locals appreciate the value of the dollar.

The gag cartoon is intended for a men's magazine. The woman is drawn with the impossible proportions more or less typical for this genre. The wordplay is a bit forced, as go home is not quite the same as come home.

This original gag cartoon artwork comes from the estate of comic book legend Joe Simon. It was sold last year by Heritage Auctions.

1980 Moscow Olympics Enamel Pin

The Winter Olympics open today in Sochi. The last time Olympic games were held in Russia it was a part of the Soviet Union. The 1980 Moscow Olympics came at a time when the breakup of the Soviet Union was well nigh inconceivable. The Soviet Union had invaded Afghanistan in December of 1979 and the U.S. led a 65-nation boycott of the 1980 games. The Soviet Union retaliated by boycotting the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

This enamel pin was obtained by a fellow student who went on a Russian Study Group shortly after the Moscow Olympics. The pin itself is very poorly made with a flimsy clasp. I'll be wearing it today, but only if it will stay on.

This same pin design is seen here at the lower left from a 2008 post on the epromos blog.
