Charles Addams: In the Library's Stacks

How many photographs does it take to sell an original New Yorker cartoon by the great Charles Addams? Two? Four? An eBay seller goes all in with twenty-four.

Note:  Another great New Yorker cartoonist, Edward Koren (1935-2023), passed away on Friday morning. Posts on Attempted Bloggery about his work may be seen here.

Happily, Charles Addams was quite prolific. Images of his original cartoon art, souvenir drawings, and published rarities would very likely make for fine future blog posts. There is no need to send twenty-four photos. Just saying.

Readers who have purchased New Yorker-related art through the eBay Make Offer option are encouraged to inform this blogger of the full details of negotiation. The public wants to know!

Jane Glickman's Copy of Favorite Haunts by Charles Addams

With all the souvenir drawings cartoonist Charles Addams has left for his many admirers to enjoy, it wasn't until yesterday, at least on this blog, that we saw him place Wednesday and Pugsley Addams together. Today we see Addams Family sister and brother sharing the page again, and from the very same February 16 sale at Potter & Potter Auctions, Inc., of Chicago. The 1977 drawing made for, we are informed, one Jane Glickman in her copy of Favorite Haunts (1976) shows a rather hefty Pugsley holding Wednesday, seated, on his shoulder. In addition, Addams has to contend with a bit of smudged ink, for which he improvises a creature called a blot.

With a presale estimate of $1,000 to $1,500, the book sold for an impressive $2,200, not including of course the $550 buyer's premium, tax, and shipping. It isn't only Pugsley who chooses to do some heavy lifting.

Fleur's Copy of Favorite Haunts by Charles Addams

In the year of its publication, Charles Addams presented his friend Fleur with a personalized copy of Favorite Haunts (1976). The similarity between Addams and Uncle Fester is implicit in the drawing here. The dog is Fleur's greyhound, it would seem.

Fleur's greyhound was later to appear in her copy of Creature Comforts (1981), for those who may have forgotten:
