The Boston Globe: Cartoon Books of 1945

To help readers in 1945 with their holiday book buying, the Boston Globe published a number of capsule reviews on Wednesday, November 28. Subjects on the book page included "For Sportsmen," marketed to returning soldiers hoping to turn their energy to leisure activities, and "Dream House," as those same soldiers would very soon need a place to live with their growing families. Then there was "Visual Fun: Collected Cartoons Drawn for Laughter." Five current cartoon books were mentioned. Four of them collected work by New Yorker artists, something the Globe failed to note. The great war was over. It was time to sit back and have a good laugh.

Betty Parsons's Copy of All in Line by Saul Steinberg

The year 1945 saw the release of Saul Steinberg's collection All in Line. The book is extraordinary. So is his art dealer Betty Parsons's copy.

Note:
This is the fourth and final book dedicated by Saul Steinberg to Betty Parsons that Joe Petro III somehow chanced upon and added to his library. My thanks to Joe for sharing it here.

Wow. I am eager to show more. If you too have access to personalized Steinberg books, or access to someone with access to them, please send scans or photos to me for use on Attempted Bloggery.

The Sultan of Sweet: 1945 Pepsi-Cola Calendar by Otto Soglow

Seventy-five years ago, New Yorker cartoonist Otto Soglow (1900-1975) illustrated Pepsi-Cola's calendar for the year 1945. In that year, like 2020, New Year's Day fell on a Wednesday. Unlike 2020, 1945 was not a leap year. So you can use this calendar in 2020, but only until February 29. After that, all the 2020 calendars should be deeply discounted.
