Ronald Searle Illustrates Tom Lehrer: National Brotherhood Week
The cartoons of Ronald Searle (1920-2011) provided the perfect accompaniment to the songs of musical satirist Tom Lehrer (born 1928). There are only a few illustrations published in the 1981 songbook Too Many Songs by Tom Lehrer: With Not Enough Drawings by Ronald Searle, but they're all attention-grabbers. One of these originals, illustrating the classic Lehrer song "National Brotherhood Week," was in the collection of cartoonist Richard Thompson (1957-2016), who himself fell strongly under Searle's influence. The artwork was sold yesterday at auction in Rockville.
