Cartoons in which expectant fathers were congratulated by hospital staff on the birth of a child have become dated since the days of, say, Charles Addams, who created one of the most famous icons of this genre: "Congratulations! It's a baby" (The New Yorker, November 9, 1940, p. 21). Since the 1970s, fathers generally have been allowed in the delivery room, making the anxiety-ridden labor and delivery waiting area an obsolete setting. Gahan Wilson ignored this obstacle but showed us a father who is a member, more or less, of the plant kingdom. His cartoon was published in the artist's 1996 collection Even Weirder. The original artwork is currently offered for sale.
