Jean-Michel Folon: Mail Art

A postcard illustrated in ink and watercolor by Jean-Michel Folon was sent from France via air mail in 1976 to Evelyn Farland of Poster Originals, Limited. Her New York City gallery sold original art posters. On the postcard, Folon incorporated the company logo into his figure's eyes while mistakenly rendering the word Posters as a plural in the address. The artwork, complete with stamps and postmarks, was put on the auction block in 2019 with an estimate of $5,300 to 6,100. It apparently did not find a buyer, although every lot in the sale is listed as passed, so who knows what really happened? Whatever the case, the original art is now available for purchase at $3,500.

Note:  Of course, I would love to be able to show more original art by Jean-Michel Folon on this blog. In addition, among the many categories of art pursued here at Attempted Bloggery, few are more elusive than mail art. Readers are encouraged to send scans of original mail art by any of the artists covered on this blog.
