Gregory d'Alessio: Surveying the Scene

An original Saturday Evening Post cartoon by Gregory d'Alessio was recently listed by Bartleby's Books of Chevy Chase. It depicts a couple strolling together down a city sidewalk of a winter's day, unaware that they are about to collide with a surveyor's transit mounted on a tripod. The caption is unknown. Is the woman telling her man to put on his hat or he could take ill and wind up in the hospital? Is there a caption hidden under the matte? That matte is in poor condition but the artwork itself seems only a bit faded so far as we can see from the area of the image.

Note:  This artwork remains available from Bartleby's Books at the time of posting. I am in the market for information about the original publication date and caption. I did contact the 8 Henderson Place Foundation, which celebrates the legacy of Gregory d'Alessio and fellow cartoonist Hilda Terry, his wife, but as yet I haven't heard from anyone.

I am, as ever, happy to post other d'Alessio or Terry artwork submitted by readers.

Ronald Searle: The Ref

"Football: The Beautiful Game" was an online-only auction held at Bonhams London on December 13. All the works related to a sport known here in the States as soccer. The sale featured works from Chris Beetles, Ltd.

The Ref is an undated work by Ronald Searle that looks to be from the 1950s. It was published in the Tribune, a democratic socialist newspaper based in London. The referee looks over his left shoulder for a possible infraction, whistle at the ready. His hanging right arm ends in what Searle referred to as a "medieval" hand in the Russell Davies biography.

Note:  I don't follow what every other nation calls football and I don't keep copies of the Tribune in my home library. Still, I would like to hear from anyone who may chance to come across this work in its pages.

My Entries in the Moment Cartoon Caption Contest for November/December 2023

Moment magazine's Cartoon Caption Contest for the November/December 2023 issue depicts an Orthodox Jewish man preparing to carve a turkey with the aid of an unusual cutting implement. My six submitted captions are shown below. The drawing is by Benjamin Schwartz.

"Can anyone come up with a blessing for this?"
"Sorry, but the carving knife is on backorder."
"Is anybody here in a hurry?"
"Why is everybody so snippy?"
"Does anyone see a dotted line?"
"Usually I work smaller."

I won a $50 gift card for contests #12 and #13, so I was excited to try again. This is contest #14 and it features Santa Claus on a psychiatrist's couch. Five entries are permitted; each of mine is shown below. The cartoon is by Jonny Hawkins.

"Sure I check it twice, but then I go back and recheck it over and over."
"I better not cry."
"I don't suppose you could prescribe some cookies?"
"I hope you're not making a list."
"Actually, I'm bipolar."

Peggy Bacon: Particularly Afraid of Each Other on Fridays

"Particularly afraid of each other on Fridays" is an original book illustration by Peggy Bacon (1895-1987) for Jerre Mangione's Mount Allegro: A Memoir of Italian American Life (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1942). The artwork was offered at Swann Galleries in 2021 with an estimate of $600 to $900. There it went unsold. Last month the same drawing was listed at Weiss Auctions with a lower estimate of $400 to $600. There it did find a buyer . . . for a hammer price of $200.

Peter Arno: Cyrano de Bergerac

In the midst of New Yorker cartoonist Peter Arno's classic collection Man in the Shower (New York: Simon and Schuster, 1944), he provides an interlude with four full page illustrations of literary Classics: The Three Musketeers, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. They are by no means typical of Arno's best work and they appeared in The American Magazine, not in The New Yorker, prior to their appearance in the book. Arno must have felt a fondness for them, but they are far from his most memorable drawings in the volume.

The illustration entitled Cyrano de Bergerac, depicting an important scene from the 1897 play by Edmund Rostand has to belong to the same series. The piece didn't make the cut for Man in the Shower and probably wasn't reprinted elsewhere.

On December 10, the Arno drawing was offered for sale by Clarke Auction Gallery of Larchmont in the lot immediately after his composition Mother's Little Helper. They came to the market together out of an estate in Rye. The presale estimate for each was $1,000 to $1,500.

May 7, 2024 Update:  I have updated this post to reflect my current belief that this series of literary illustrations were first published in The American Magazine. I base this on a label found on the verso of Arno's illustration of Ivanhoe currently listed on eBay.

August 5, 2024 Update:  I have added the publication history to the captions on the original art.

Note:  This drawing by Peter Arno was probably published in The American Magazine, but when? Anyone who can provide a good citation should get in touch. Collectors take note: both published and unpublished Arno are always worth a post or two around here.

Peter Arno: Mother's Little Helper

Peter Arno would occasionally intersperse a few more serious drawings among the brilliant cartoons in his published collections. One can't imagine they ever got anywhere near the reception that his gag cartoons did, but he no doubt was seeking some sort of artistic validation. One such drawing is Mother's Little Helper which appeared in his 1949 book Sizzling Platter. The execution is somewhat gritty and the title is evidently meant ironically. The influence of Georges Rouault is apparent.

The ink and wash drawing came up for auction in Westchester on December 10. The estimate was $1,000 to $1,500.

Lot 80 was indeed sold, but not for all that much. Bidding reached just one half the low estimate.

The sober artwork is reproduced in Peter Arno's Sizzling Platter (1949) on page 70 opposite a buoyant circus drawing.
