"As I write this, The New Yorker is dead." Renata Adler's Gone: The Last Days of The New Yorker (1999) is in no way to be confused with Gigi Mahon's The Last Days of The New Yorker (1988), which bears a strikingly similar title. At one point Adler filled in for film critic Pauline Kael at The New Yorker. Much later, in 1980, Adler published a blistering review of Kael's work in The New York Review of Books.
Five years ago, a signed copy of Gone was sold on the auction site eBay. It's time we had a look at it:
