Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Dime Register Bank

Ten years ago I was intrigued by a vintage Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs dime register bank licensed by Walt Disney Enterprises in 1938, the year after the release of the movie, and I archived the eBay sale on which I found it. Such dime banks were common and issued in many varieties, no doubt intended to encourage thrift among schoolchildren. They retailed for a dime. To some, it may seem a bit cruel to have a tin bank designed to lock a child's first dime away and not to release it until fifty dimes are collected. It was still the Great Depression, after all, although purchasers may have been relatively well off. It was sold on eBay in 2013 for $113.61 after twenty bids. Today numerous examples are offered on eBay in a variety of conditions for between $35 and $120.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Dime Register Bank
eBay item description
"I thought about testing it out with a dime but I did not want to have to put in 50 more."

Ten years ago, I was not archiving the eBay bid history. It doesn't seem like much of a loss.

Original purchasers of the dime bank did well against inflation, if they held on to it. And even better if they saved a lot more dimes.
