On Wednesday at Zikorn Arts & History Objects in New York, a very special copy of Par Avion (1989) by cartoonist Jean-Jacques Sempé (1932-2022) was sold at auction. It came from the estate of Lee Lorenz (also 1932-2022) and it bears a dedication with an ink drawing made by the artist in 1991, the year of publication of the English-language edition. Being able to add a book such as this to one's library is the rare sort of privilege that comes with being The New Yorker's art editor—or with being the well-funded, successful bidder at auction three decades later.
