Cartoonist Claude Smith, who signed his name simply as Claude, drew many of his multi-panel cartoons on separate sheets of paper. This would have made the drawing and any corrections easier to accomplish. An example of this practice may be seen in the original art to a three-panel gag published in the New Yorker in 1964.
