One element of Ralph Steadman's art is collage, present in a great many works although seldom front and center. A postcard for Stamp Out Art (great name!) published by Culture Carriers (also a great name!) reproduces in black and white a collage which is every bit as unsettling as one of Mr. Steadman's drawings. The title, apparently never proofread, is Well alright—what's on telly then ! [sic]. I would interpret this image as an indictment of corporate culture, perhaps more specifically in the entertainment industry.
Note: Good news! "A Retrospective: Ralph Steadman" is currently on view at the Society of Illustrators in Manhattan where it will remain through October 22.
I have been able to continue writing posts about Ralph Steadman for longer than I planned in part because readers have shared things with me that would otherwise be hidden to the world. If you can help out with images of original drawings, writings, or obscurities, please do so.
