A work of original cartoon art by
Peter Arno appears to date from America's entry into the Second World War. At the time, many civilians rushed into military service and were unfamiliar with the finer points of military protocol. Note how Arno has folded back one of the panels of the mirror to avoid drawing complicated and potentially distracting reflections. Presumably Arno only initialed the art for publication and later signed it for presentation. Owners James H. and Candace Van Alen were a society couple who were founders of the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport. Mrs. Van Alen died in 2002 and property from the estate was sold later in the year.

I recently purchased the original from a dealer in NYC. It is decent condition and appears as in the photos above. The frame is in poor shape. I want to preserve the frame. My wife wants a remount. A small and silly martial dispute fitting the beguilement of Arno's hero in this work.
ReplyDeleteThis has been on and off the market, but I believe Adam Baumgold Fine Art was the most recent to offer it. Reframing it will allow you to show off the Arno art at its best and keep your wife happy, so it's a win-win as far as I'm concerned. Not that you asked...
