Barbara Shermund's original color cartoon art of native islanders bidding farewell to American servicemen would seem to date from the end of World War II. The gag depicts the markedly differing reactions of the native men and women to the troop withdrawal. The bereft native women exhibit an obvious preference for the servicemen. No doubt this alone would be politically incorrect by today's standards. Even more incorrect, the women appear to have become somewhat westernized in makeup and dress while the men certainly have not. Most disturbing, the women also seem to have lighter skin tones and more caucasian features than the men. Oh dear, what sort of a cartoon is this?
The cartoon may have been published in Esquire or Pictorial Review. In 2008, it was given an estimate of $700 to $900 on iGavel, but it received no bids. Last month it resurfaced on eBay where it sold for $305.

January 12, 2019 Update: This cartoon caption does not appear in Esquire's online database, so I have provisionally reassigned it above to Pictorial Review. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who can document its complete publication history.
