Ice-Skating in Central Park, New York is a joyful oil on canvas by
Constantin Alajálov dating from 1945. Central Park is at its wintry best as skaters take to the ice in the Pond. In the background is the Central Park Zoo complex and the line of buildings along Fifth Avenue. This scene is an utter delight, but it is showing us the end of an era. In 1949, Wollman Rink would open just to the left of this image and ice skating in southern Central Park would forever be relocated a few yards over.
