Ronald Searle actually made two finished versions of this 1991 Valentine's Day New Yorker cover. He submitted them both to The New Yorker and let the editors choose between them. The other version was similar, but the cats were sitting on a wooden porch rather than a brick wall.
Note: My most recent related post is about a caricature Searle made probably for TV Guide regarding "The Beautiful Phyllis Diller Show" in 1968. It can be found here.

Do we have the alternative version?
ReplyDeleteWe do not.
ReplyDeleteThe cat on the right has no idea what she is in for! Brilliant!
DeleteI had just purchased an engagement ring around when this was published and we got married that year. Brian, you're describing exactly what Searle drew here, but I can tell you after twenty years of marriage that it's the cat on the left who has no idea what he's in for!
